July 23, 2004 - NYC
The Apple Store techs in Manhattan said the hard
drive was corrupted and unsalvagable. They could replace it in a week
or so but all the data would be lost. Not the best of news.
This seemed a good time to update my computer, so I came
home with a new 15-inch powerbook, which, to tell the truth, I had been thinking
of doing for some time. And despite Apple's proclamations of doom,
I was able to transfer all the files from the old computer to the new one.
It was "like I never left home." The only thing missing was the
few hours of down time when I couldn't do anything with the old computer.
As nearly as I can tell, however, no data were lost.
I'm still inclined to end the daily reports, however.
I hope the new computer will be more tolerant of that.
