June 22, 2004 - Bergen, Norway

Well, the weather sucks again, and we were worried about getting (keeping) bad colds.  However, we were determined to see something of the city and get some value out of our Bergen passes.  We began by walking through the market, where Sheila made friends with the fishmongers.

After the market, we found and rode the funicular railway to the top of a cliff overlooking Bergen, providing wonderful views of the city, despite the onset of more rain.

Hakon's Hall was erected between 1247 and 1261.  It's located out near the end of the rightmost finger of land in the panorama above.  It was partly destroyed in 1944 when a German ammunition ship exploded in the harbor (cause unknown), but mostly they just lost the roof.  Thirteenth century architecture was built to last.

As I write this, I have not been able to go online since Bodoe, and the desk clerks indicated it was not possible in this hotel.  Wandering about with my computer, however, I found a wireless signal, went back to the desk, and got them to sell me a 24-hour subscription.  I will now find out if it works.
